A calcineurin inhibitory protein overexpressed in Down's syndrome interacts with the product of a ubiquitously expressed transcript BJMBR
Silveira,H.C.S.; Sommer,C.A.; Soares-Costa,A.; Henrique-Silva,F..
The Down's syndrome candidate region 1 (DSCR1) protein, encoded by a gene located in the human chromosome 21, interacts with calcineurin and is overexpressed in Down's syndrome patients. As an approach to clarifying a putative function for this protein, in the present study we used the yeast two-hybrid system to identify DSCR1 partners. The two-hybrid system is a method that allows the identification of protein-protein interactions through reconstitution of the activity of the yeast GAL 4 transcriptional activator. The gene DSCR1 fused to the GAL 4 binding domain (BD) was used to screen a human fetal brain cDNA library cloned in fusion with the GAL 4 activation domain (AD). Three positive clones were found and sequence analysis revealed that all the...

A Carrot-and-Stick Approach to Environmental Improvement: Marrying Agri-Environmental Payments and Water Quality Regulations AgEcon
Kaplan, Jonathan D.; Johansson, Robert C..
Agri-environmental programs, such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, provide payments to livestock and crop producers to generate broadly defined environmental benefits and to help them comply with federal water quality regulations, such as those that require manure nutrients generated on large animal feeding operations to be spread on cropland at no greater than agronomic rates. We couch these policy options in terms of agri-environmental "carrots" and regulatory "sticks," respectively. The U.S. agricultural sector is likely to respond to these policies in a variety of ways. Simulation analysis suggests that meeting nutrient standards would result in decreased levels of animal production, increased prices for livestock and poultry products,...

A CHOICE EXPERIMENT MODEL FOR BEEF ATTRIBUTES: WHAT CONSUMER PREFERENCES TELL US AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
This paper reports the main findings obtained from a U.S. consumer choice experiment regarding perceptions of food safety and meat attributes, and to the extent to which these attitudes translate into willingness-to-pay (WTP) for labeled ribeye steaks. The results indicate that USDA food safety inspection labels, labels indicating that the steak is tender, or the ability to trace back the animal to the farm are more important to consumers than country of origin labeling.

A Cohort Approach for Predicting Future Eating Habits: The Case of At-Home Consumption of Fresh Fish and Meat in an Aging Japanese Society AgEcon
Mori, Hiroshi; Clason, Dennis L..
Due to a rapidly aging society, stagnating per capita income and rather stable prices, traditional economic analyses methods lost their power in the 1990s to predict future food product consumption in Japan. This study, in part, remedies this problem by projecting future consumption of selected products, using a cohort approach with economic factors tentatively set aside. Per capita consumption of individual household members by age was derived by incorporating family age composition into household data classified by age groups of household head (HH). Individual consumption estimates were decomposed into age, cohort and time effects, using the Nakamura's Bayesian cohort model. These effects were synthesized to predict per capita consumption in each...

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EU-MOROCCO FTA VS. MULTILATERAL LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Elbehri, Aziz; Hertel, Thomas W..
An applied general equilibrium model with oligopoly and scale economies, based on detailed plant-level data, is used to contrast the impacts of the Morocco-EU free trade area (FTA) to multilateral trade liberalization on Morocco'’s economy. Simulation results show that the FTA agreement is likely to have adverse effects on Morocco due to: (a) deteriorating terms of trade, (b) reductions in output per firm in industries dominated by scale economies, (c) diversion of imports away from non-EU suppliers, and (d) potentially adverse effects on the aggregate demand for labor. We contrast this FTA with a multilateral liberalization scenario along the lines of those proposed under the Doha Development Round and find this more beneficial to Morocco, with overall...

A comparative ecophysiological study of two infaunal filter-feeding bivalves: Paphia rhomboides and Glycymeris glycymeris ArchiMer
Savina, Marie; Pouvreau, Stephane.
A comparative ecophysiological study was carried out in September and November 2002 for two bivalves, Paphia rhomboides and Glycymeris glycymeris, which are significantly harvested in the Western Channel (French coast). Individual measurements of clearance and respiration rates were performed for both species, in several experimental conditions of temperature and phytoplankton concentrations. Those conditions were chosen to be in the range of those commonly observed in the subtidal area of the Western Channel. The mean value of clearance rate and oxygen consumption obtained from continuous data recording did not reveal any significant influence of temperature in the investigated range, but a significant difference between P rhomboides and G. glycymeris....

A comparative study of the ovaries in some Brazilian bees (Hymenoptera; Apoidea) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Martins,Gustavo Ferreira; Serrão,José Eduardo.
The present paper concerns the morphological features of ovaries in 33 species of bees with different social behavior patterns. The ovaries of bees were examined under light microscope. They are polytrophic-meroistic ovaries formed for an anterior germarium and a basal vitellarium. The germarium houses the germ cells and in the vitellarium there are follicles arranged linearly. In general the follicle is constituted by a nutritive chamber (a cluster of nurse cells) and an oocyte chamber, both covered by a single epithelial layer of follicular cells. The number of ovarioles per ovary and the number of mature oocyte per ovary were analyzed. Measurements of ovariole length, oocyte size, oocyte width, follicular epithelial height and the intertegular distance...

A comparison between organic and integrated apple production: First results after 5 years of observation Organic Eprints
Kreuzwieser, Andreas; Kelderer, Markus.
Organic apple production is of increasing commercial importance throughout Europe, but especially in South Tyrol where about 25% of the whole European organic apple crop is produced. In organic apple production, producers face the challenge of choosing varieties that are both in demand and also resistant to the main pests and diseases. Every now and then, the question arises, if yields, losses and profitability are different in integrated and organic orchards and in how great are the differences between single apple varieties. In 1999 the Laimburg Research Centre started a field trial to observe the effects of different cultivation methods on 18 apple varieties in a randomised block design. In the first four years of production, significant...

A comparison between South African agricultural exports to the European union and those of other selected southern hemisphere countries AgEcon
Adriaen, D.; Kleynhans, Theo E.; Tollens, Eric.
Primary Eurostat data of EU imports of agricultural products from selected southern hemisphere countries - namely, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand - was used to compare the exports from those countries to the EU for the period 1988 to 2000. The study starts with a general overview of the total and agricultural export performance of these selected countries in a global context and their specialization indexes for food. This is followed by a comparison of the total value, total mass and value per tonne of agricultural exports to the EU and of their exploitation of seasonal differences with the northern hemisphere in terms of relative emphasis on particular product groups and value/mass ratios of their major products. Comparison is...

A COMPARISON OF CAPITAL MEASURES IN U.S. AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Andersen, Matthew A.; Alston, Julian M..
This study compares two panel data sets that measure capital input at the state-level in U.S. agriculture. Despite a number of similarities between the data sets, such as the composition of assets, aggregation procedures, and time frame, an examination of the final estimates of capital service flows reveals that they are drastically different for all 48 contiguous states. We examine the methods used to construct the capital series for each data set, consider some important differences in data sources and the types of data used to construct the capital measures, and outline the main assumptions concerning depreciation, service lives, interest rates, aggregation, and the scope of goods included in each of the data sets. The analysis indicates that an...

A COMPARISON OF DEPARTMENTAL TEACHING EFFICIENCY IN THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD SYSTEMS, AND NATURAL RESOURCES: AY2000-AY2004 AgEcon
Lambert, David K..
Teaching efficiency is investigated for the nine departments in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources at North Dakota State University. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, departments are compared to their College peers in converting teaching faculty and teaching funds into three teaching outputs: student credit hours generated, undergraduate majors, and graduate students. Most departments are efficient in the technical conversion of inputs to outputs under variable returns to scale. Scale effects are evident, indicating some departments consistently extract higher average productivity from inputs in servicing undergraduate majors, graduate students, and in generating student credit hours.

A COMPARISON OF NUTRIENT APPLICATION TRENDS ON LIVESTOCK FARMS IN CORN AND COTTON GROWING REGIONS AgEcon
Nehring, Richard F.; Christensen, Lee A.; O'Donoghue, Erik J.; Sandretto, Carmen L..
Recent trends in livestock concentration suggest that there may be an increasing risk of water pollution from manure applications. These trends in livestock operations may be offsetting improvements in commercial fertilizer management that have the potential to reduce the risk of water pollution. This conclusion was derived by tracking excess nutrient trends between 1996 and 2002 and by examining measures of economic performance for livestock farms. First, a link was established between the expansion of AFOs (Animal Feeding Operations) and excess nutrients from commercial fertilizer and manure sources. Second, technical efficiency was measured in order to identify whether technical efficiency explains structural change and in order to see whether...

A Comparison of Plant and Animal Based Fertiliser for the Production of Organic Vegetable Transplants Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin; Alföldi, Thomas; Siegrist, S.; Weibel, Franco.
In Switzerland, transplants for organic vegetable growing have been fertilised traditionally with slaughterhouse by-products. In autumn 2000, the Swiss government restricted the use of such products because of the BSE crisis. To maintain the production of organic transplants, alternative fertilisers needed to be tested. Eleven alternatives to horn powder (standard fertiliser) were selected based on the organic standards of the European Union, including feather powder (as an animal based product without BSE risk). The products were mixed with a standard growing media for organic transplants in a concentration of 300 mg nitrogen L-1 growing media. Different experiments where set up with head lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var....
